With the second installment of Jessup Cellars’ 'A Year Over the Vineyard' drone project shot by videographer and drone operator, Bruce Mossberg, the wind was kicking up and dangerously pushed us into the branches of an oak tree! As we’ve teased previously, we’ll be flying over the ‘Back Bowl’ and ‘Raines” blocks of ‘Truchard Vineyard’ in the rolling hills of Los Carneros each quarter for a year. With new drone programming technology, we can fly the exact flight pattern with each pass to capture the evolution of the seasons. At the end of a full year, the final video will be a time elapsed video of the seasons in a single flyover. Take note of the steepness of these hillside blocks, which provide us with some of the finest fruit available in Los Carneros! Here’s a quick guide to what you’re looking at when you see the winegrape varietals posted to the video… PINOT NOIR: Jessup Cellars sources 60% of our Pinot Noir from the ‘Back Bowl’ block. Winemaker Rob Lloyd sources from two additional ‘Truchard Vineyard’ blocks, and then for depth and complexity, blends these lots to craft our Jessup Cellars Los Carneros Pinot Noir. CHARDONNAY: Now that you’ve finally got to see where we source our Jessup Cellars Los Carneros Chardonnay, you can better understand how winemaker Rob Lloyd is able to create such an unforgettable Chardonnay that exhibits both power and elegance. This steep hillside block consisting of white ash volcanic soil is very unique against a region that is predominately clay. MERLOT: To get Merlot properly ripe, the noble winegrape needs a long, slow hang time to achieve perfection. This is why Jessup Cellars sources our Merlot from the cooler region of Los Carneros. Once again the white ash volcanic soils and steep hillsides gift a deeper complexity to our bottling than many other Merlots.
